Employees who are happy and satisfied will work harder, be more productive, and are less likely to leave unexpectedly.
But how can you keep employees happy while not breaking the bank?
Here are a few suggestions.
1. Treat them with respect
There’s a reason this is at the top of the list: Employees who do not believe their managers treat them with respect, or who do not feel valued or appreciated, will not invest in their jobs and are likely to express their dissatisfaction. It may appear that saying please and thank you is unnecessary, but requests are much easier to manage than a barrage of demands. Respect goes a long way toward keeping employees satisfied and engaged.
2. A sense of trust
Trust and respect go hand in hand, but they are not synonymous. Managers who believe in their employees’ ability to complete their work on time allow them to work at their own pace and set their own priorities. It also guards against micromanagement.
3. Allow them to contribute to the development of their own role
Job titles may not always accurately reflect what a person does or is capable of doing. Some employees begin with a limited number of tasks and responsibilities, but within a few months, that list has grown significantly. If an employee expresses interest or skill in an area of the company that is outside of their designated role, consider whether giving them the opportunity to grow professionally.
4. Create a positive work environment
Determine what motivates your employees to come to work and then do more of it. Determine and resolve any issues or pressure points in their workplaces. If there are problems between coworkers, especially if the animosity spreads to the rest of the team, work with them to find a solution and move forward respectfully. Make an open-door policy and put it into action.
